‘Very painful weeks’ ahead – Trump warns Americans

US President Donald Trump has told Americans to be ready for “very painful weeks” ahead as the country struggles to combat the coronavirus pandemic.

Following a grueling couple of weeks that have quickly transformed the US into the epicentre of the deadly illness, Mr. Trump on Tuesday evening urged his countrymen to follow guidelines, calling it “a matter of life and death”.

The President said at least 100,000 Americans could die in the coming weeks if the present rate of infections did not come down.

Meanwhile, countries worldwide have started setting up hospitals in ships, stadiums and parks as part of desperate measures to curb the spread of the virus.

In India, the world’s second most populous country, officials have been trying to trace participants from a religious festival that has become a virus cluster.

More than 800 people died in both Spain and France on Tuesday. Spain is currently the worst hit in Europe, behind Italy, whose northern region has been completely ravaged by Covid-19.

In The UK, the government on Tuesday described a rapid increase in virus deaths there as “deeply shocking”.

There are now more than 800,000 confirmed cases of Covid-19 globally, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has said.
